Merlot
This variety has become unpopular in recent years for two reasons. The first is the mass production of cheap Merlot, which has no added value, and the second is the vilification of it in the movie Sideways, especially in America. However, when this variety, which gives a very fruity aroma, is put in the right hands of the winemaker and the vigneron, it produces beautiful and structured wines. The most famous Merlot still certainly comes from the right bank of Bordeaux, where the cooler climate gives earthier wines, whereas California Merlot, for example, is much more robust, more into ripe fruit and tobacco.
