Kendall-Jackson, La Crema, Edmeades

27.06.2025

Among the wineries that have significantly contributed to shaping the current image of Californian winemaking are Kendall-Jackson, Edmeades and La Crema. Although each focuses on different regions, varieties and styles, they are united by their affiliation with the Jackson Family Wines company, which has long been known as a producer of premium wines with an emphasis on terroir and sustainable viticulture.

Jackson Family Wines was founded by Jess Jackson in the 1980s, but the history of the family winery dates back to 1974, when the first vineyard was planted. From the outset, Jess Jackson emphasised the production of quality wines from the most suitable micro-regions with the aim of showcasing the specific character of each location. Today, the wine group is not limited to California — its portfolio includes wineries in Oregon, Chile, Australia and South Africa. In any case, it remains a family business, for which family is the cornerstone and guarantee of continuity and values.

Kendall-Jackson

Kendall-Jackson Winery is located in the renowned Sonoma County region and also has vineyards in Mendocino, Lake County, Monterey and Santa Barbara. Production focuses primarily on varietal wines from central and northern California, which are characterised by a fuller style, an emphasis on fruitiness, balanced acidity and a modern expression.

The winery's flagship wine is Vintner's Reserve Chardonnay, which has been the best-selling Chardonnay in the United States for three decades. This iconic representative of the Californian style combines ripe tropical fruit tones, subtle vanilla nuances from oak barrels and juicy acidity, which keeps it drinkable even at higher intensities.

The Kendall-Jackson range is complemented by higher-end series:

Kendall Jackson is not just a traditional family winery. It also uses modern technology and pays close attention to sustainability and care for the environment and the entire community. This is evidenced by several awards that the winery can boast – naturally, it is certified as a Certified California Sustainable Vineyard & Winery. In 2022, the winery received the Sustainable Wine Growing Leadership Award, one of the most prestigious awards in the field of sustainability in California and the global wine industry. It also belongs to an international group of wineries that have set themselves the goal of producing 100% sustainable wines – International Wineries for Climate Action – and has received other awards. The winery's goal is to increase biodiversity on every plot of land by 2030.

La Crema

La Crema Winery was founded in 1979 with the aim of producing wines from the best cool-climate regions of California and Oregon. From the outset, it has specialised primarily in Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, varieties that are perfectly suited to the local climate and soil conditions.

The winery's philosophy is based on a combination of craftsmanship, respect for terroir and sustainability. Women have played an important role in the development of the winery from the very beginning. Thanks to Barbara Banke, wife of founder Jess Jackson, and the support of other women, La Crema has become not only a respected winery, but also an inspiration for new generations of female winemakers. Jess Jackson's two eldest daughters, Laura and Jenny, also played a significant role in the development of the winery, building a solid foundation based on quality production and an ecological approach.

La Crema currently offers a wide range of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines from appellations such as Russian River Valley, Monterey, Sonoma Coast and Willamette Valley in Oregon. Thanks to this last region, wine lovers now have the opportunity to taste wines from the highly prized Oregon terroir. La Crema wines are characterised by their freshness, delicate fruitiness and elegance, which is more akin to the European style.

Edmeades

In 1963, Dr. Donald Edmeades, a cardiologist from Pasadena, planted the first vineyards in a remote part of western Mendocino County. His son Deron founded Edmeades Winery in 1972, which quickly gained a reputation for its distinctive mountain Zinfandel wines.

In 1988, Jess Jackson bought the winery and made it one of the first brands in his portfolio. The tradition has been continued and developed by the current head winemaker, Dave Ready, who has been producing robust Zinfandels with a typical Californian character since 2017.

Edmeades is a winery focused almost exclusively on the production of Zinfandels from Mendocino. These wines are characterised by their full body, rich fruitiness, higher alcohol content and distinctive spiciness. The range includes both basic Mendocino Zinfandel and wines from individual vineyards, which, thanks to their specific locations and old bush vines, offer an intense and terroir-unique expression.

All three wineries: Kendall-Jackson, La Crema and Edmeades, represent the diversity of Californian winemaking under one family brand. Although they differ in regional focus, grape variety composition and wine style, they are united by their emphasis on quality, respect for terroir, responsible farming and family values. The wines in their portfolio offer an opportunity to discover not only the diversity of Californian appellations, but also a winemaking philosophy that combines tradition with a modern approach and an emphasis on sustainability.
