At a blind tasting in Paris, where Californian wines were compared with the most prestigious Burgundy producers, the 1973 Chardonnay from Chateau Montelena won first place among white wines. This result shocked the professional public and became a milestone that forever changed the global wine map. One of the bottles of this legendary vintage is still on display at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History as a symbol of this groundbreaking moment.

Chardonnay plays an iconic role here, a variety that has made the winery famous around the world and remains its flagship to this day. This is reflected in the approach in the cellar – the winery avoids excessive malolactic fermentation and uses French oak very sparingly to preserve freshness, purity of aroma, and authentic expression of the terroir. Cabernet Sauvignon plays an equally important role, forming the backbone of Chateau Montelena's red wine production. Grapes from the estate's own vineyards in Calistoga give rise to Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, a complex and deep wine that reflects the character of northern Napa Valley, while Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley represents a more accessible style with an emphasis on fruit purity and balance. This stylistically restrained, European-style Riesling is reminiscent of the early days of winemaking and underscores the winery's longstanding respect for tradition and terroir. The portfolio is also complemented by Zinfandel from older plantings, a wine with a deeper color, spicy character, and Californian expression.
