Hoopes Vineyards

05.03.2026

The first warm days, fresh green buds on the vines, and vineyards coming back to life after winter. Spring is a time of new beginnings in the world of wine. Winemakers return to their vineyards, check the first growth of the vines, and prepare for another vintage that will once again bear the mark of the landscape and their work.

It is also the ideal time to discover wineries whose philosophy is based on a deep connection to nature and the place where their wines come from. One such winery is Hoopes Vineyard, a family-owned winery in California's Napa Valley that combines tradition, regenerative agriculture, and the authentic character of its vineyards.

A Family Story from Napa Valley

Hoopes Vineyard is a small family winery with deep roots in Napa Valley. The Hoopes family history is primarily associated with vineyards in Oakville and Yountville—two prestigious appellations that are among the heart of California winemaking.

The story of the winery began with Spencer Hoopes, who bought approximately twelve acres of land here at a time when it was not yet certain that Napa Valley would become one of the most famous wine regions in the world. Spencer began growing grapes for local winemakers and quickly built a reputation as one of the best Cabernet Sauvignon growers in the area.

The quality of his grapes was so highly valued that winemakers began to use the name Hoopes as a symbol of quality. It was then that the idea of producing their own wines under the family brand was born.

Today, the winery is run by the second generation of the family – Lindsay Hoopes, who continues the family tradition while bringing new energy and a modern approach to winemaking.

Lindsay Hoopes grew up among vineyards and absorbed the atmosphere of her family farm from childhood. Nevertheless, she initially took a different path. She studied law at Trinity College in Ireland, lived in various countries, and worked in international logistics and as a deputy district attorney in San Francisco, among other things.

She returned to the family winery in 2012, when family circumstances brought her back to Napa Valley. Since then, she has been at the helm of Hoopes Winery, gradually developing it in a new direction.

Under her leadership, the winery collaborates with renowned winemakers and expands its portfolio with smaller series of wines that capture the diversity of Napa Valley vineyards. Lindsay also brings a strong emphasis on sustainability, biodiversity, and regenerative agriculture to the winery.

Historic Oakville and Yountville Vineyards

The winery is primarily located in the vineyards of Oakville and Yountville. Many of them date back to the 1980s and 1990s and are planted with historic grapevine clones that are part of Napa Valley's early winemaking heritage.

One of the winery's unique features is the historic vineyard in Oakville, which was planted before the spread of phylloxera. It is still considered one of the oldest vineyards in the area and represents an important piece of wine history. It was from this vineyard that the grapes for the first vintage of Hoopes wine came, and it remains the winery's flagship to this day.

Although Hoopes specializes primarily in Cabernet Sauvignon, their portfolio showcases a wider variety of Californian wines. Interesting wines include Red Blend, elegant Pinot Noir, and harmonious Chardonnay Hoopla, which showcase the different faces of California terroir. Hoopla is a secondary brand of more entertaining, accessible wines that Hoopes produces separately from their main premium portfolio. These are wines for joy and fun.

Hoopes Vineyard is a proud member of several prestigious organizations that reflect its commitment to family tradition, sustainability, and a craft approach to winemaking. These include the Wine Institute, he largest association of California winemakers, which promotes education and visibility for California wines, Save the Family Farms Napa Valley, which helps protect small family wineries, Napa Valley Grapegrowers, an association of grape growers focused on best agricultural practices, Certified Craft Winery, which certifies handmade and locally produced wine and Oakville Winegrowers, which promotes the prestigious Oakville region. Membership in these organizations underscores Hoopes Vineyard's commitment to sustainable production, quality grapes, and authentic winemaking, while strengthening their position in the community and in the marketplace.

Sustainability and regenerative farming

For the Hoopes family, caring for the land is essential. The winery therefore farms with an emphasis on organic and regenerative practices. The vineyards are certified organic or are currently undergoing the certification process.

The farm uses regenerative agriculture principles that promote soil health and biodiversity throughout the ecosystem. Farming practices include water recycling systems, natural biodiversity in the vineyards, and livestock farming as part of the farm. The goal is to create an environment that is sustainable in the long term and allows the vineyards to thrive naturally.

The winery also includes the Oasis by Hoopes project – a regenerative farm, garden, and rescue shelter for farm animals. This project was created as a place where winemaking, agriculture, and animal care come together. Rescued animals find a safe home here, and visitors can learn about the principles of organic farming in practice. Oasis is also a meeting place for wine lovers and people who want to better understand the relationship between the landscape, agriculture, and wine.

Hoopes Vineyard is an example of a winery that combines family tradition, a modern approach, and respect for nature. Their wines reflect not only the character of Napa Valley, but also the personal story of the Hoopes family. Whether you choose a full-bodied Red Blend, an elegant Pinot Noir, or a fresh Chardonnay, you will always taste a wine that has been created with an emphasis on authenticity and terroir. Perhaps that is why Hoopes wines are so well suited to spring—a season of new beginnings, discovery, and the joy of good wine.
