It All Begins with the Land

Today, the winery farms six estate vineyards: The Cutrer, Vine Hill, Les Pierres, Owsley Ranch, Kent, and Shiloh. Each site offers a unique combination of elevation, soil composition, exposure, and microclimate, resulting in wines with individual personalities united by elegance, freshness, and meticulous fruit expression.
From the very beginning, Burgundy served as Sonoma-Cutrer's inspiration. The goal, however, was never to recreate French wines in California. Instead, the winery embraced Burgundy's respect for terroir, attention to detail, and traditional winemaking practices while expressing them through the unique conditions of Sonoma County. To this day, grapes are hand-harvested, carefully sorted, and fermented and aged in French oak barrels crafted by long-standing cooperage partners. At the same time, Sonoma-Cutrer has never hesitated to adopt modern technology whenever it enhances fruit purity and aromatic expression. In the 1980s, for example, the winery introduced its own cooling tunnel system, allowing freshly harvested grapes to be chilled to the ideal temperature before pressing. Chardonnay as a Lifelong Passion
Many wineries produce Chardonnay. Few have devoted nearly their entire story to it. The founders of Sonoma-Cutrer originally searched for land suitable for Cabernet Sauvignon. However, the cool climate of the Russian River Valley quickly changed their plans. What proved less than ideal for Cabernet turned out to be nearly perfect for Chardonnay. Today, the variety has become the winery's signature and one of the key reasons for its international reputation.

The People Behind the Wines
Behind every bottle are dedicated people. At Sonoma-Cutrer, the winemaking team is led by Cara Morrison, who joined the winery in 2005 after falling in love with the style of its Chardonnays. A graduate of the University of California, Davis, Morrison gained experience around the world—from Australia and Chile to Europe—before continuing and thoughtfully evolving Sonoma-Cutrer's long-standing winemaking tradition.
She is joined by Senior Winemaker Zidanelia Arcidiácono, who grew up among the vineyards of Mendoza, Argentina, and specializes in Pinot Noir, as well as Sam Parsa, whose background in plant science and modern viticulture supports both winemaking and the winery's sustainability initiatives. What unites the entire team is a deep respect for nature, patience, and the belief that great wine is first and foremost made in the vineyard.
