Premiere Napa Valley 2026: Auction of Exclusive Lots

08.04.2026

Premiere Napa Valley is not a typical wine festival for the general public. It is an exclusive professional event where winemakers, distributors, sommeliers, and journalists from around the world come together. The main goal is to showcase unique vintages of wine that are not typically sold in stores and to auction them off at a prestigious event. This event thus combines tastings, networking, and trend-setting in the world of wine.

How the event works

The entire Premiere Napa Valley week is divided into several segments. Participants visit wineries or tasting rooms, where they have the opportunity to taste wines directly from the winemakers and discuss production methods, vintages, and the character of individual wines. Networking is also a key component—winemakers, distributors, and sommeliers establish business relationships, share experiences, and arrange future collaborations.

The highlight of the week comes during Saturday’s auction, where wineries auction off so-called “lots”—small, unique batches of wine produced specifically for this occasion. Buyers, mostly restaurants or distributors, acquire exclusive wines that subsequently appear only in select restaurants or private collections. Premiere Napa Valley is thus not just a tasting event, but also a platform where the future of Napa Valley on the global market is shaped.

History of Premiere Napa Valley

Premiere Napa Valley was founded in 1997 as an initiative of the Napa Valley Vintners. The goal was to create a professional platform where Napa Valley winemakers could present their finest—and often limited-production—wines directly to merchants, sommeliers, and industry professionals.

Since its inception, the event has quickly earned a reputation as the region’s most prestigious wine auction and tasting. Each year, it showcases exclusive wines that are not commonly available, combining networking, business opportunities, and educational experiences for attendees.

Over the years, Premiere Napa Valley has evolved—the selection of lots has expanded, the quality of the wines presented has improved, and specialized sessions have been created for white varietals, vintage sparkling wines, and experimental cuvées. Since 2005, it has become a globally watched event where elite winemakers from Napa Valley meet with global distributors and restaurants.

Each year’s event thus not only reflects current trends in winemaking but also strengthens the Napa Valley brand as a world-class region, which is the primary long-term goal of the Napa Valley Vintners organization.

Napa Valley Vintners

Now that we’ve mentioned the Napa Valley Vintners, let’s take a closer look at it. It is the leading professional association of Napa Valley winemakers, bringing together hundreds of producers who create blends, participate in tastings, and actively represent the region. Premiere Napa Valley is their flagship event—it is the tool through which the NVV promotes, protects, and strengthens the prestige of Napa Valley around the world.

Napa Valley Vintners handles the entire organization of the event—from the program concept and selection of participating wineries to the auction itself. It also sets rules that guarantee the exclusivity of the entire event, such as the requirement that each winery create a unique batch of wine intended exclusively for this occasion.

Another key factor is that the association’s members themselves are behind the individual lots. Premiere Napa Valley is thus not an anonymous auction, but a direct showcase of the work of specific winemakers, who present the best of their production—often in the form of experimental or exceptional cuvées that would otherwise never have been created.

Equally important is the organization’s role in marketing and business. The proceeds from the auction and activities associated with the event are used by Napa Valley Vintners to promote the region, educate industry professionals, and strengthen business relationships around the world. Premiere Napa Valley thus serves as a strategic tool that helps shape the perception of Napa Valley as one of the world’s most prestigious wine regions. It is precisely thanks to this coordinated collaboration among winemakers under the Napa Valley Vintners banner that the event has such a powerful impact—it is not just about individual wines, but about a collective presentation of the region, its style, and its values.

NVV Mission, Vision, and Values

  • Mission: To promote, protect, and strengthen Napa Valley as a wine region
  • Vision: Napa Valley is a leading wine region, preserved for future generations
  • Values: Excellence, leadership, stewardship, innovation, collaboration, camaraderie, and community

Goals and Strategies

  • Position Napa Valley as the world’s premier wine region
  • Provide leadership on issues critical to the wine community
  • Strengthen membership through a world-class organization

Thanks to these principles, Premiere Napa Valley is more than just an auction—it is a platform that connects producers with the global market, showcases the region’s values, and helps shape the future of Napa Valley in the world of wine.

Premiere Napa Valley 2026: A Renewed Sense of Energy and New Trends

The 2026 event, held from February 18 to 21, attracted more than 1,000 industry professionals from 25 U.S. states and 12 countries. According to the organizers, the atmosphere was very positive—tastings, meetings with winemakers, and auctions were marked by enthusiasm for the quality and tradition of Napa Valley.

Cabernet Sauvignon traditionally dominated, but this year white wines and non-traditional varieties also performed very well. Initial feedback from experts on the new vintage suggests balanced wines with a pronounced fruity character and a delicate tannin structure. At the same time, it turned out that average lot prices fell slightly compared to previous years, reflecting current market dynamics.

Premiere Napa Valley 2026 brought not only a strong selection of wines but also interesting pricing signals. Although the average price fell year-over-year, there were lots that clearly demonstrated that there is still strong demand for top-tier wines from Napa Valley. Among the most expensive wines by price per bottle were primarily iconic Cabernet Sauvignons from prestigious appellations. The absolute leader was a lot from Shafer Vineyards in the Stags Leap District, which reached approximately $750 per bottle.

These were followed by, for example:

  • Alpha Omega (To Kalon Vineyard) – approx. $600 per bottle
  • Fairchild Napa Valley (“TICKETS by Stones”) – approx. $500
  • Revana Estate and other top producers – approx. $500

These results confirm that the top segment of Napa Valley continues to rely primarily on Cabernet Sauvignon and iconic vineyards.

Auction Surprises: Diversity and the Return of “Less Typical” Varieties

One of the biggest surprises of the year was the breadth of styles and varieties that stood out at the auction. Alongside traditional Cabernets, the following caught the eye:

  • Chenin Blanc (Ballentine, Gaderian, Trois Noix)
  • Charbono (Frog’s Leap)
  • Sparkling and vintage wines (např. Schramsberg 1995)

These lots demonstrate that Napa Valley is gradually shifting from the dominance of a single variety toward greater diversity and experimentation—and that the market is responding positively to this change.

Lot 76: Grgich Hills Estate Pays Homage to Winemaking History

Lot No. 76 from Grgich Hills Estate, titled “Timeless: An Homage to Miljenko ‘Mike’ Grgich,” deserves special attention. This wine is notable not only for its profile but, above all, for its story. It is a Chardonnay from Los Carneros (vintage 2024), created as a tribute to Miljenko “Mike” Grgich—the legendary winemaker who helped launch the modern fame of California wines in Paris in 1976. His legendary Chardonnay from Chateau Montelena defeated the finest French wines and laid the foundation for the international recognition of California wines.

The lot was auctioned for $17,280 for 120 bottles, placing it in the mid-price range of the auction—not the most expensive item, but all the more significant in terms of symbolism. The wine comes from historic vineyards in the Carneros region and stylistically follows Grgich’s philosophy of elegance, working with acidity, and an emphasis on terroir. At the same time, it references his iconic work with Sauvignon Blanc (Fumé Blanc) and Chardonnay, which helped define the modern style of Napa Valley.

It is precisely such lots that demonstrate that Premiere Napa Valley is not just about prices and prestige, but also about stories, continuity, and the legacy of individual wineries.

Notable Lots and Surprises of the Auction

This year’s auction featured more than 170 lots. Among the most notable were:

  • Collaborative lots from Diamond Mountain – Davies, Diamond Creek, Dyer a Lokoya.
  • Experimental varietals – Chenin Blanc (Ballentine, Gaderian, Trois Noix) a Charbono (Frog’s Leap).
  • Sparkling and vintage wines – such as Schramsberg 1995, Chandon a Lail Vineyards.
  • Grgich Hills Estate – lot 76 „Timeless: An Homage to Miljenko ‘Mike’ Grgich“ – Chardonnay 2024 z Los Carneros, a tribute to legendary winemaker.

The biggest surprise of this year’s vintage was the breadth of varieties and styles that made their mark. Lots of non-traditional white varieties and vintage sparkling wines were closely watched and critically acclaimed, demonstrating that Napa Valley is aggressively pushing the boundaries of traditional styles.

Once again, it has been confirmed why Premiere Napa Valley 2026 is considered the premier event in the global wine market. It combines the traditional values of Napa Valley with innovation and experimentation, offering a platform where winemakers, distributors, and experts from around the world come together.

The 2026 edition demonstrated that the region maintains its exclusivity and high quality while also opening the door to unconventional grape varieties and new approaches to winemaking. Lots such as “Timeless” from Grgich Hills Estate serve as a reminder that behind every wine lies a story, tradition, and the passion of individual winemakers. Thanks to the organization and leadership of Napa Valley Vintners, Premiere Napa Valley remains not only a prestigious auction but also a strategic tool for building the region’s brand, supporting the community, and connecting with the global market. Premiere Napa Valley is thus not just a week of tastings and auctions—it is a celebration of Napa Valley, its history, its future, and the people who make it exceptional.
