Varieties
California wines excels primarily in the production of red wines, with Cabernet Sauvignon being the dominant variety, followed by Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Merlot and others. A separate category is red blend, which in good wineries is a guarantee of great wines. Usually this red bland is the calling card of the winery's winemaker and is always given special care and the winery's finest wines.
But besides red wines, California also produces great white wines. Especially the Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc varieties. Chardonnay is typically produced with oak barrel aging.
Recently, great light rosé wines are also becoming more common, and a new addition is an orange.
